PSCI 3603 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Nuclear Artillery, Henry Kissinger, Technological Change
Document Summary
Despite the events currently going on in the world which may make things seem more violent than ever, we are actually living in the most peaceful time in modern history. There are really no more international wars (eg. wwi & wwii) There are fewer countries with civil wars. Wars are also less deadly than in history. The death rate from terrorism has somewhat declined (in the western world, doesn"t include middle east) An indication of security is any decline in the chance of you dying. In most places, 50% of deaths are from murder. These states have monopolized and legitimized violence. The highest levels of violence today take place where there is not nation-state systems (eg. middle east, africa) The percentage of democracies is rising, more places are becoming democratic. Technology and interconnectedness has made war more costly (eg. nuclear weapons) Reductions in nationalism (many previous wars were fueled by hyper-nationalism)
