AHSC 314 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Parenting Styles, Birth Order, Middle Age
Document Summary
For most teens, the family system also includes a relationship with a sibling. Your birth order can have consequences for your development. Birth order influences both parent-child and sibling relationships. No two children experience the parental relationship the same way, because children are all born at different times in their parents lives. The increasing independence of their children could lower the parent"s self-esteem. Middle age parents are coping with changes in their bodies, and are recognizing the aging process. It may be difficult for parents to maintain their parenting styles. Parents need time to readjust and increase their lowered self-esteem. Mothers often look to their teens for support and to act as confidants, which imposes difficult responsibilities onto the teen. Divorce is easier to handle when one is an adolescent as opposed to a younger child. Divorce that results in less parent conflict is preferred over non-divorced parents with a lot of conflict.
