There is a five-step procedure for data analysis: step 1: validation and editing, step 2: coding, step 3: data entry, step 4: machine cleaning of data, step 5: tabulation and statistical analysis, step 1: validation and editing. This first step helps to ensure the interviews are administered properly and completely and that the research results reflect the legitimate response of individuals. Validation ascertain that interviews were conducted as specified and to detect interviewer fraud or failure to follow key instructions. Editing: the process of ascertaining that questionnaires were filled out properly and completely. In other words, it checks for interviewer and respondent mistakes. Coding: process of grouping and assigning numeric codes to the various responses to a question. Closed-ended questions are usually pre-coded and need to be tabulated, but open-ended questions create a coding dilemma. With cati and internet surveys, data entry are completely eliminated for closed-ended questions.
