COMM 222 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Appurtenance, Baby Boomers, Millennials
Document Summary
To illustrate those relations, there is a basic model: Beliefs and values, that are fully internalized, form attitudes that guide behaviour. First, we need to define values: a broad tendency to prefer certain states of affairs over others. (deals with what is good or not). Values might be different depending on the generation, as every generation grew up under different socialisation experiences which leads to different values, different workplace and different forms of leadership. We can distinct four generations in the workplace: Traditionalists (1922-1945) - hard worker, stable, loyal, focused 8% of the workplace. Baby boomers (1946-1964) team perspective, dedicated, experienced 44% of the workplace. Generation x (1965-1980) independent, adaptable, creative, willing to challenge 34% of the workplace. Millennials (generation y) (1981-2000) optimistic, multitasks, tenacious, team-oriented 14% and growing. Some research tend to say that values are actually the same among generations but are just expressed differently. Values are not different only between generations but also between different cultures.
