Document Summary

Mici 3119 lecture 31 november 27, 2019 nitrogen and phosphate. Response to nitrogen supply: bacteria use inorganic (nh4. If you have lots of ammonia, you would repress all the genes for growth in poor nitrogen sources. When ammonia is limited, glutamine synthetase and gogat enzyme is required (gogat for making glutamate from -ketoglutarate). Synthetase vs synthase: both types of enzymes help in forming chemical bonds to synthesize a new molecule in a biological system. By definition, synthetases must hydrolyze an atp molecule to function, while synthases, do not. Response to nitrogen supply: under ammonia-limiting conditions, glutamine synthetase becomes more active and its expression is stimulated resulting in more glutamine synthetase to scavenge ammonia. The genes regulated by ammonia supply belong to the ntr regulon: one of the operons in the regulon is glnalg, encoding glutamine synthetase, nrii (histidine kinase), and nri (response regulator). The glutamine synthetase"s activity is regulated and it becomes more active when ammonia levels are low.
