Document Summary

Chapter 4 - sensing and perceiving our world (p. 122-163) From the moment of birth, we have experiences that help shape who we are. Most of these experiences derive from our sensory organs. Process of transfusing light to neural impulses is a part of sensation. In photo, sensation is not changing but perception changes inside brain. Sensation involves transduction of the physical world into neural impulses. Perception involves binding these sensory impulses into a representation of the world. People who had damage to back part of the brain had visual issues. The brain is not homogenous mass, it is a highly organized structure where neurons responsible for visual info gather in a certain region (parts of the brain have di erent functions) Not only are they distinct regions but the visual system itself has distinct organization itself (every neuron sees a di erent part of the visual world) Portion of brain devoted to a sense depends on the animal.
