Document Summary

Cardiac arrhythmia: irregular heartbeats, can go hand in hand with blocked arteries, amiodarone: treatment, can cause blood clot formation, pace maker: takes over work of the body"s natural pace maker. They are powered by bodies that need to changes every few years. Infused intravenously, causing blood cells to release plasminogen, which breaks down to plasmin, which dissolves the clot. The catheter has a balloon-like structure at the end that will inflate at the site of a clot. They insert a stent (metal wire) which keeps the artery open. This is permanent: stents can also release drugs, preventing formation of clots. Somewhat controversial as the drugs used can also cause inflammation: risk of stent: potential arterial damage, bypass surgery: bypass the problematic artery (open heart surgery). We must build another channel, where blood can flow around the blocked site: heart-lung machine: replaces use of the heart during open heart surgery, where the heart stops beating.
