#1 cause of cancer death in the most developed countries including canada (because most people don"t survive it, good for prostate, female breast and colorectal but not for lung cancer) Survival rate has not improved very much. Death rate started going up in the mid 60s (women started to smoke in canada during wwii) Deaths from lung cancer keep increasing (levels off a bit, but death from breast, colorectal and prostate have been going down) Takes around 20 years from the time people start smoking and the time they die : accumulation of mutations until development of a malignant cell which starts the tumor. => carcinoma in situ (anaplasia) that will then get to the basement membrane -> invasion and metastasis (cells enter the circulation and take residence in other major organs) By the time it is detected -> gone all over the place. Different types of lung cancer depending on the cell of origin :
