PHAR 303 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Arrow Poison, Nerium, Toxic Heavy Metal
Document Summary
Phar 303 lecture 1: introduction to toxicology (robaire) Textbook: casarett and doull"s essentials of toxicology 2nd edition, mcgraw hill, 2010. Substances are different than drugs in that some substances (chemicals, mostly) do not necessarily interact with receptors in the body while drugs target specific receptors in order to produce the desired effect. Much of what we know in tox comes from epidemiological studies. In vitro methods allow us to minimise animal use: toxicogenomics see how the potentially toxic substance affects the cell in terms of gene and protein activity. Defined as: the study of the adverse effects of xenobiotics on biological and ecological systems. Xenobiotic = any substance that is foreign to a biological or ecological system. Essentially, it is the study of the adverse/negative effects of substances. They can be classified: drugs any drug in a high enough dose can be toxic, food additives, pesticides are effective bc they are toxic.
