O a set of behaviours expected of someone in a particular position in a: example: occupational roles, family roles, roles in typical interactions, social system. Ex: customer must pay for clothing, being sick role. gender roles. Role distance: behaviours: when the expectations of two roles one has require incompatible, ex: being a working mother. Role identification: experiencing a role as a reflection of one"s true self. We often assume that individuals are entirely at fault: blame personalities, abu ghraib. We all hove roles, parts to play: wedding party, orchestra, football team. Prison situation often involves hostility, abusiveness, confrontation. Roles and social reality play a vital role. Stanford prison experiment: mock prison set up at stanford with students as guards & prisoners, roles were set up at random, guards wore mirror sunglasses, guards were instructed to keep order. Acts like a mask, allowed inappropriate behaviour.
