Document Summary
The stereotype acts as a lter that causes us to ignore/reject relevant information when making the judgment. Recall that the princeton experiments describes what stereotypes students held about other groups, but they did nothing to advance our knowledge of how stereotypes operate and why they exist. A) noticed that if you look at the traits/characteristics seem to re ect two basic categories of human judgment: 1) competence (smart, ef cient, intelligent) 2) warmth (sociable, nice, musical) Whatever group (in your social identity; you could be both a woman and black) that is salient in a particular social context is the one that"ll matter. Why don"t high-power groups try to convince themselves and low-power groups that they"re both competent and warm? and vice versa. Why wouldn"t men stereotype women as both incompetent and not warm? perhaps because if we completely crush the low-power group they might rebel and threaten the status quo.
