Biochemistry 2EE3 Lecture 11 • • ~50 billion neurons • Brain better then best computers at facial recognition • Brain is largest consumer of metabolic energy • Do not know where individual electrical potentials come from, therefore hard to characterize areas of brain • Amount of area given to sensing in brain corresponds to how sensitive sense is (ex. taste has large area, tongue very sensitive) • • Sensory = afferent • • If neuron makes decision to fire signal, signal goes from cell body to terminus of axon to muscle/secretory gland/neuron • Once it decides to go, it must go! • • Electrical signal is carried by ions • Myelin sheath insulates so signals do not cross over • Nerve contains many axons • • Voltage is negative • Membrane usually negative potential because anions inside cell typically • • Resting membrane potential: -70mV • Unequal distribution of cations/anions across membrane is cause of membrane potential o Ex. K+, Na+ • Proteins also contribute to charge • Na/KATPase maintains concentration gradient – largest consumer of energy in your body • • Ion channels allow electrical signal to propagate alone axon membrane • Channels are pores in the membrane and only
