Biochemistry 2EE3 Lecture 19 • • Citric acid cycle is how energy is extracted from pyruvate, 3 carbon atom • When carbons are burned, a lot of energy is taken out and a small amount from that is converted to GTP, a large amount to coenzymes (high energy NADH, FADH2) • NADH, FADH2 are not consumable, are sent to oxidative phosphorylation • Not too much detail about reactions, just overview • Multi-enzyme complex in detail • • • Amino acids that are completely reduced are much more energetic (ex. leucine) • Fatty acids are most efficient way of conserving energy in cells due to long chains • • Eight reactions in CAC • Structural formula of intermediates not responsibility, but number of carbons is • As with glycolytic pathway, names of intermediates, coenzymes, enzymes are important to know • • Low energy oxidized to high energy reduced • Energy is brought to citric acid cycle due to acetyl group • • • Very important pathway picture • Low energy is white, high ener
