Document Summary

All prokaryotes require amino acids, vitamins, nucleoides and carbs for growth and cell division. Gene regulaion is for prokaryotes to adapt to their environments. Dna has the info it needs to change to its environment. Rna/dna polymerases and genes coding for ribosomal proteins. Required constantly for normal funcion so they are consituively expressed (constantly transcribed/translated) Regulated genes: turned of and on when needed transcribed/translated when the bacterial cells alter their gene expression patern. allows for the producion of important enzymes or proteins that are needed to bring about changes in growth or division. Enzymes are needed to metabolize nutrients so it is important that they can regulate the expression of those enzymes. B-galactosidase is produced by turning on transcripion of the b-galactosidase gene. They grew e coli. in a lactose-free medium and added lactose, waited a bit, then removed it again. Meanwhile, they measured the amount of b-galactosidase produced.
