Personal identity is based on our unique personal characteristics (e. g. interest, abilities, traits) Social identity based our perception that we belong to various social groups (e. g. gender, nationality, religion) Perception efficient (both aid and hinder) Refers to the tendency for the target to be perceived in the same way over time. Refers to tendency to select, ignore, and distort cues in order to form a big picture of target. E. g. physical appearance (attractive = good) category and ignore variations among them. E. g. age, gender, race which personality characteristics go together. 3 aspects: category of people (e. g. university professors, assume that individuals in category has certain traits (e. g. disorganized, absent-minded, perceive that everyone in this category possesses these traits. Attribution: percieving causes and motives personality or intellect: e. g. friendliness, laziness, greed, important for rewards and punishments. Helps us develop impressions of ambiguous targets.
