Document Summary
People base their actions on the interpretation of reality that their perceptual system provides, rather than on reality itself. Three components: a perceiver, a target that is being perceived, same situational context in which the perception of occuring. The tendency for the perceptual system to defend the perceiver against unpleasant emotions. (ex: see what they want to see, hear what they want to hear. ) Our perceptual system works to ensure we do not see or hear things that are threatening. People form perceptions of themselves based on their personal characteristics and memberships on social categories. Our sense of self is composed of a personal identity (ex. interest) and a social identity (ex. gender). Bruner"s model of the perceptual process in slide show. The impression we form of others are susceptible to a number of perceptual biases: Organize their perceptions around central traits (i. e: appearance, height, weight) Personal theories that people have about which personality characteristics go together.
