Document Summary
Cpu consists of hundreds of thousands or millions of electronic circuits. In today"s pcs the cpu is contained in a single silicon chip called a microprocessor chip. Microprocessor chips makers are intel - pentium iv, motorola 68070, cyrix. The arithmetic/logic unit (some describe the cpu as 4 units by viewing the arithmetic/logic unit as two segments) To control and to execute instructions for logic and arithmetic operations. Cpu uses data and instructions stored in memory. Ram/cache for current program instructions and data. Rom for machine startup instructions, microcode and hardware configuration. Performs simple (integer) arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, etc. ) Performs simple logical operations (such as the comparison of two numbers then this can result in the selection of subsequent operations) The circuits within the arithmetic/logic unit are created from elementary components called gates. Each gate has one or more inputs and an output. The only input and output values for gates are bits or binary digits valued 0 or 1.
