Offshore drilling: greater then 60% of current oil production. 50% of the world"s population lives: less than 100km from the coast. No legislation in 50% of countries with coastline. 1977 ; canada declare a 200- nautical mile; exclusive fishing zone off its coasts. After 1992 people were reporting cod fish were smaller then befre. 1986 massive drop in landings after it. Fishing of cod was banned in 1993 after they released their was no cod anymore. Main sources of marine toxicants in canada: Long range transport of toxicants an issue eg for aboriginals in the arctic"s. British columbia: 4th largest producer worldwide of farmed salmon. 3-4 kg of marine fish produce: 1kg of farmed salmon. Astaxanthin & canthaxanthin lose eye sight. Farmed salmon shown to add : 11x more toxins then wild salmons. In the future a closed system is being considered. United nations convention on law of the sea (unclos), 1974. Greater then 1% of ocean is protected.
