Where we"re at (know these trends for exam) Over last 100 years, pop diagnosed w/ mental illness has increased considerably (rates of mental illness diagnoses has increased) Rates of disability owning to mental illness climbing, 5/10 major causes of disability related to mental health. Number of mental disorders has increased 4x since 1950s. Subjective rating of non-diagnosed distress higher than ever before. Growth of psyences has been proliferation of psychological and biological treatments (way more drugs than we eve did in the past) Something about this that resonates with our broader political climate. Typical narratives around improving mental health focus reflects broader ideological tendencies toward individualization and personal responsibility.
