HTHSCI 1LL3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: C-Peptide, Alpha And Beta Carbon, Carboxylic Acid
Document Summary
All the proteins in the body are made from the 20 amino acids coded for by our dna, which provides the correct instructions. Proteins and enzymes are the biochemical workforces in our body. The unique sequence of amino acids in each protein (the primary sequence) predicts its conformation. The secondary structural elements of folding are the alpha and beta sheets. The tertiary structure is how the protein comes together in a three-dimensional shape. The folding of an amino acid is related to its function, and if it doesn"t fold properly it will not work. Some mutations will cause problems and others will not. Quaternary structure is when there are multiple sub units. The properties of side chains on each amino acid dictates the associations between them leading to the conformation of the protein. All of the 20 amino acids have a common structure.
