Document Summary
Over 100 different neurotransmitters have been identified in the cns. Neurotransmitters can be divided into 3 major classes: Small molecule neurotransmitters: small molecule neurotransmitters (e. g. dopamine, neuropeptides (e. g. substance p, neurotransmitter gases (e. g. nitric oxide, acetylcholine- related to alzheimer"s disease & memory. Dopamine (da)- schizophrenia, parkinson"s disease: monoamines. Neurons origination from the locuse ceruleus project to limbic system & cerebral cortex. Maintains emotions tone (mood, arousal, wakefulness & reward) Neurons originating in raphe nuclei project to the limbic system and cerebral cortex (co-localized with ne system) Many receptors classes: 5-ht1 to 5-ht7 with subtypes for each. Maintains sleep wake cycle, emotional tone & sensory perceptions (e. g. pain) Lack of adequate serotonin in the cns can lead to depression. Most common mental health disorder of older adults. Situational depression: short-lasting, often reactive as a result circumstances. Post-partum depression: presents 2 weeks to 6 months after childbirth. Seasonal affective disorder: associated with dark winter months & lower levels of natural light.
