Our thoughts and behaviours are influenced by the people around us. Behaviours performed in a group are different from behaviours performed individually. Observes cyclists that cyclists raced faster when competing against each other, compared to when they raced against the clock. The presence of others was an important variable on the performance of the actor. Co-actor: another individual performing the task; doing the same thing as the actor. Audience: a group of people watching an individual perform a task. Social facilitation: the increases performance that occurs in the presence of co-actors or an audience. The presence of others can sometimes hinder, rather than help, a performance. Zajonc"s research offered a solution to the problem of social facilitation. The findings of the bobo doll experiment are inconsistent with behaviourist ideas regarding the necessity of reinforcement. Suggested that the presence of others increases arousal.
