Our thoughts and behaviours are influenced by those around us and we look for cues to determine how to act. Common sense =/= research findings because there are many cases where common sense is not what has been used. Unit 2: presence of others - slide 4. Norman triplett: credited with first formal study of social psychology in 1898. Cyclists raced faster when competing in a group vs when they were training alone. These effects are also seen in children where there is no reward. Triplett hypothesized that the presence of others was an important variable in performance. Co-actor: another individual performing the same task. Audience: a group of people watching an individual perform a task. Social facilitation: the increased performance that occurs in the presence of co-actors or an audience. Sometimes, the presence of co-actors/audience hinders performance. Zajonc"s resolution: the presence of others increases arousal (yucky!) How well we perform is based on the complexity of the task.
