PSYCH 1XX3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Pareidolia
Document Summary
Bottom up= data driven, correctly processing the data in front of you. The checkboard illusion: due to top down expectations and shadowing we see b as being lighter than a, but the squares are the same. Our brain makes manipulations when there are shadows. When something is in a shadow it is darker, so we filter it out. (ex: in the black/blue dress situation, some people filter out all the blue and see a different colour) Prior experiences/priming can play a role on what you see. Ex: the structure on mars, there was an image that looked like a face on mars. The angle and shadowing made the mountain look like a face. Big events: we assume there is an important cause when there is a big event. This is why people thought the face on mars was part of a larger conspiracy like aliens. We tend to combine like objects together and we tend to see faces.
