Extra-family influences on Development
November 24, 2016
Effect of media on development very controversial
- We were going to permanently damage children by allowing them access to violent and
inappropriate content in music
- VHIP – met to allow parents to limit the media their children could be exposed to
o can program TV to show specific channel – use code
o correlation does not = causation – can’t conclude that behaviour is changed because of
media impact
- issues in research on effects of media
o random assignment to violent programming or extensive video gaming?
o Pre-existing groups
TV positive Effects
- Sesame street
o Prepares children for school
o School readiness in school – bad
o Childre ere’t ready soioeotioally or ogitiely to go to shool
o Middle class families a sed their kids to preshool ut loer lass faily a’t
because expensive
o Designed intervention for the children that were low-income – better off in school later
tha kids later ho did’t get these iteretios
o Went to a party and met producer with PBC – told her about his work and turned it into
a TV show – Sesame Street – result of all the interventions
o Does it meet its goals?
▪ Within the first year – 50% of children were watching it regularly
• Attractive and educational to kids
• Research revealed it had significant impact on school readiness on kids
who watched it REGULARLY
▪ “ae for shos like Mister Rogers’ Neighourhood
• If you view the shows a lot, children were more pro-social
• Less prejudice, less racism if they watched it
- Some kids watch 30 hours of TV
o Families: Low monitoring of what children are doing
TV’s egatie effets
- How violent is TV?
o Violence people get rewarded for – coyote and road runner
o Research investigates:
▪ Immediate effects
• Violent behaviour following watching these shows

Document Summary
We were going to permanently damage children by allowing them access to violent and inappropriate content in music. If you view the shows a lot, children were more pro-social. Less prejudice, less racism if they watched it. Some kids watch 30 hours of tv: families: low monitoring of what children are doing. How violent is tv: violence people get rewarded for coyote and road runner, research investigates: Immediate effects: violent behaviour following watching these shows. Longitudinal effects: does(cid:374)"t allo(cid:449) us to (cid:373)ake (cid:272)ausal state(cid:373)e(cid:374)t all correlational. Iv1: exposure to violent behaviour (live vs. film vs. cartoon vs. no exposure) Iv2: consequences to model (reward vs. punishment: dv1: aggression (generally, dv2: imitative aggression, model rewarded: boys higher than girls, model punished; lower than reward but boys still significantly higher than girls. Children learn new aggressive behaviours by watching them be: modeled, rewarded. Effect of power rangers on aggression in the playground (boyatzis et al. , 1995)
