Incredibly complex system that is mastered by babies remarkably quickly. Language is something we do very rapidly, and effortlessly, but there is a lot of work that has to happen. During the course of this day, you might say about 20,000 words. These will be chosen from a vocabulary of approximately 80,000 words. This can be done at about 200 words per minute. Those 80,000 words in your vocabulary are made up of only 40 different sounds (phonemes) These phonemes are spoken at a rate of about 11 phonemes per second. Sentence phrase word morpheme phoneme. Features manner of production, place of articulation. Morphology the meaningful bits of words. Orthography the letters that make up sounds. Pragmatic (cid:862)real (cid:449)ord(cid:863) (cid:373)ea(cid:374)i(cid:374)g: how language is used in real world. Prescriptive: what you ought to do, o(cid:373)e set of (cid:862)rules(cid:863) Descriptive: what the language actually is. Can create new words by combining phonemes. Can apply old rules to new words: vape, vaped, vaping.
