Nurture socialization: the lifelong process by which we learn our culture, develop our personalities, and become functioning members of society. Social interaction is a fundamental element of socialization. 3 building blocks that shape all social interactions: (1) social status a recognized social position (2) role a set of expected behaviours (3) norm societal expectations of behaviour: vary from culture to culture. Primary socialization: occurs when individuals learn the attitudes, values, and appropriate behaviours for individuals in their culture. Secondary socialization: occurs through participation in more specific groups with defined roles and expectation. Work, religion, government: all of these impact who we are, how we act, etc. Erving goffman: social interaction is a sort of play in which people present themselves so that they appear in the best possible light.
