The enlightenment: importance of science, rationality, empirical investigation etc. The conservative reaction to the enlightenment: wanted to keep society as the way it was, didn"t want change. Because of these two some aspects of sociology focus on change, others on order. He built on the idea presented by enlightenment thinkers. Both wanted to model sociology after the natural sciences. German sociology: hegel and feuerbach influenced marx and eventually weber. Marx put their ideas together (dialectical and materialism). The way to understand change in society is to look at the conflicts and the contradictions around the material production process. These propel society forward as something new emerges. Slavery to feudalism to capitalism to socialism to communism etc. Weber engaged in a debate with the ghost of marx, some of his ideas connect to marx and others go beyond.
