SOCSCI 2HR3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Controllability, Performance Appraisal
Document Summary
Must be specific to the job: reliability. Consistency in measurement is key to evaluating each employee equally and fairly: controllability. The employee has the power to improve their performance: discriminability. Can discriminate between superior and poor performance. One alleged problem with performance appraisal is that most employees seem to think they are above average and do not like to be told otherwise. Solution: design an appraisal system which offers a review of the employees work including positive and negative aspects. Including the positive things that the employee is doing may soften the blow of the nega- tive and allow them to feel appreciated in the company, yet realize that there is still room for improvement. It should be made clear to all employees that absolutely no one is perfect and there are al- ways going to be areas for improvement. To identify individuals who are not performing to required standards and for whom discipline may be necessary.
