Questions in which a phrasal constituent (often called a wh phrase ) is questioned. Questions that require a content-filled answer not yes or no . Direct questions: matrix clauses (clauses that stand alone) Questioned phrase (wh phrase) moves to a clause initial position, leaving behind a trace. Indirect wh question: i wonder which movie chris will watch t. All questions contain a semantic question feature [+q] in c (head of cp) Feature is thought to attract wh phrases to the specifier of cp (=spec-cp) Yes & no questions have a question complementizer. Indirect wh questions have a wh phrase in specifier or cp (spec-cp) Linguistic competence: mental knowledge speakers have of syntax: Modeling: 2 types of syntactic operations: merge & move. Merge: builts syntactic structures with one-to-one associations between constituents & functions. Output of merge is called deep structure (d-structure) Move creates one-to-many associations between constituents & syntactic functions. Output of move is called surface structure (s-structure)
