Document Summary

Describe the symptoms and causes of angina pectoris. State the mechanism of action of organic nitrates as antianginal agents. Explain the rationale for use of various organic nitrate preparations. Describe the mechanisms of action of beta-adrenergic blocking agents and calcium channel blocking drugs as antianginal drugs. Angina pectoris was first described by william heberden (english) in 1768 as those affected with it are seized while walking with chest pain that feels like it could kill and goes away when they stand still. Amyl nitrite was first introduced by lauder brunton in 1857 through administration of inhalation which acted in 30-60 seconds for 3-5 minutes. Glyceryl trinitrate was introduced by william murrelll in 1879 and lasted for 20-30 minutes. It is a choking pain in the chest due to lipid deposits in the coronary arteries, hindering blood flow (atherosclerosis) The pain comes from diminished blood flow and diminished oxygen supply to the heart.
