Power : democracy (from lecture 6) & capitalism. Assumption in liberalism (economic and political liberalism) that liberal democracy and capitalism reinforce each other emphasis in both on freedom (of the market, of association, of the vote, etc. ) Force of capitalism have we become more consumers than citizens ? (reich"s article and this week"s assignment) Poverty to wealth gets more extreme w/ each passing year. Role of capitalism: make profit e. g. greater efficiencies, new technologies, innovations in production and productions. Good deals, value for money, lots of choice. Role of democracy: deliberate about the common good, and about distribution of wealth, set the rules of the game (n. b this is developmental democracy ) Widely available social goods (e. g. education, health care) Don"t call us citizens call us tax payers. The latter all tend to raise the cost of goods. Capitalism is winning over democracy (debate, need to understand) That people should be involved in governing themselves.
