Document Summary

Theories must be tested to prove their validity. To test a theory, we have to generate a hypothesis, or an educated guess based on the explanations and assumptions that comprise a theory. Once the hypothesis is developed, data are collected and analyzed, and the results are determined and shared. In essence, studies are designed to test hypotheses and enable the researcher to draw conclusions. Elements of a good experiment: if performed properly, an experiment can determine a relationship between variables. That is, it can determine whether change in one variable influences change in another variable. The reason an experiment can allow a researcher to infer causality is that the researcher has strict control over the variables in the situation and can manipulate them, then see the outcome. Experiments: the primary principles followed at queen"s university are based on the. Canadian psychological association"s (cpa) code of conduct and other national standards.
