Relationship between writing and reading is very close. The more you read the better you write. Cabell emergent writing skills: mechanics: tools manual creation of characters or manual way of writing, composition: meaning of marks, orthography: rules understanding how print and language work together. Eg. print moves from left to right: alphabetic principle: Reading a book is not an intuitive skill, you need to be taught how. Research shows that there is a framework teacher can use for evaluating development of print knowledge. This increases in complexity so that we can assess where children are at: drawing scribbles (already have alphabetic principle at this age, letter and letter form connected sounds. 1: salient and beginning sounds, beginning and ending sounds. Flexible framework: children can move back and forth (from 1-2 or 3 to 1) This article is trying to figure out a way of evaluating results of instruction.
