Un-immunized or under-immunized children are at risk of infection with vaccine preventable diseases (vpd) Vpds are still transmitted throughout the world and reintroduced into canada through travel. Polio, diphtheria, measles, and whooping cough can lead to paralysis, pneumonia, choking, brain damage, heart problems, and even death in unprotected children. Epi provides data on distribution and risk factors for the disease. Monitors e ect of vaccine and burden of disease (prevalence, incidence, risk groups, severity, risk factors) 1st exposure to disease > become ill > immunity (antibodies) > 2nd exposure > don"t get sick. Types of immunity: active/acquired immune system by vaccination, passive already produced antibodies. Dose of disease that stimulates natural immune system, or arti cially stimulating. Transfer of immunity from mother to unborn child, or arti cially by the transfer of. Helps you develop immunity w/out getting sick. Made from weakened/inactive organisms that would normally make you sick. Given by injection, orally or skin pricks.
