Organizing is the process of arranging people and other resources to work together to accomplish a goal. Organizaion structure is a system of tasks, worklows, reporing relaionships, and communicaion channels that link together the work of diverse individuals and groups. Any structure should both allocate tasks through a division of labour and provide for the coordinaion of performance results. An organizaion chart describes the reporing relaionships and the formal arrangement of work posiions within an organizaion. They show formal structure, which is the oicial structure of the organizaion. Formal structures can someimes end up not making sense. An informal structure is a shadow organizaion made up of the unoicial, but oten criical, working relaionships between organizaional members. A tool known as social network analysis is one way of idenifying informal structures and their embedded social relaionships that are acive in an organizaion.
