Document Summary

Gms200- lecture 5 chapter 2 pt. 2. Born in germany to a wealthy family with political connections. One of the founding fathers of sociology. Best known for the book, the protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism, in which he claimed that capitalism succeeded because of the protestant work ethic. He was very concerned about the performance deficiencies of organizations in his day. His academic life was cut short due to a nervous breakdown in the fall of 1897. Organizations should be structured in terms of different layers of authority (i. e. hierarchy) Employees should be given well -defined responsibilities at a particular level. There should be a well-defined reporting structure - lower-level employees should be accountable to others at higher levels in the organization. People should be hired or promoted strictly based on seniority and qualifications; not based on personal connections! Personal business should not enter the office.
