Parties focus on personal characteristics (not issues) as source of conflict. Accompanied by strong negative emotions (drive to defend) Goal encourage constructive conflict, minimize relationship conflict. Problem relationship conflict often develops when engaging in constructive conflict. Three conditions that minimizes relationship conflict during constructive conflict: One party"s goal perceived to interfere w/ other"s goals. Parties more likely to interfere w/ each other. Strive for equitable + fair agreements that last. Build bridges of goodwill + trust for future. High concern for self + low concern for others. Relies on formal authority to force compliance. Low concern for both self and others" needs. May involve either passive withdrawal from problem or active suppression of issue.
