MHR 600 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Ethnocentrism, Market Basket, Internalized Oppression
Document Summary
Stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination grow from the unequal distribution of power. This creates dominant and subordinate groups in society the haves and have nots resulting in the subjugation of one group. Social construction of reality: states that the way we present ourselves in any given situation is shaped by the interactions of all our past relations and the social interactions that we have with others. As we acquire new information in our brain we sort it into folders (allport, 1954) By sorting information we unconsciously develop sets of groups: in-groups (things that are like us: out-groups (things that aren"t like us) Becomes a problem when information is hard to categorize: biracial or intersex individuals. Ethnocentrism: the tendency to regard one"s own culture and group as the standard, and thus superior, whereas all other groups are seen as inferior. Discrimination: the inequitable treatment of individuals or groups based on their characteristics or behaviours.
