Document Summary

Lipoproteins are named based on their protein content, which is measured in density. Sites of severe atherosclerosis in order of frequency: abdominal aorta and iliac arteries, proximal coronary arteries, thoracic aorta, femoral and popliteal arteries, internal carotid arteries, vertebral, basilar, and middle cerebral arteries. Chlamydia pneumonia, periodontal organisms, helicobacter (h) pylori, cytomegalovirus. Atherosclerotic lesions: endothelial dysfunction is the initiating factor in development of atherosclerosis. Injury to the endothelial layer caused by plaque formation from 3 lesions: fatty streaks, fibrous atheromatous plaque, complicated lesion. Macrophages further produce growth factors that enhance migration & proliferation of smooth muscle cells: atherosclerotic plaques consist of aggregation of smooth muscle cells, macrophages & other leukocytes. Below the cap: macrophages, smooth muscle cells & lymphocytes with central core of foam cells & fatty debris: atherosclerotic plaques consist of aggregation of smooth muscle cells, macrophages & other leukocytes. Ecm including collagen & elastic fibers, & intra/extra cellular lipids.
