SOC 502 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Economic Abuse, Legal Guardian, Situation Two
Document Summary
No distinction between nuclear and extended family. In 1950, everyone was married to someone they were blood relative to. Laws in place that prohibited from marrying outside of community. Seen as those who are not blood or legally related. Seeing family as being through blood/legal ties is very problematic because it doesn"t take into account how most people live the family today. Not about the individuals, about the social context that shapes how family violence is conceivable. Most concepts are based on physical violence. The family violence statistics are wrong because most are based on physical violence. Legal and criminal justice system rides on the notion that you need legal evidence (comes from physical) Physical violence is usually the only type of violence that has physical manifestations and can be used as evidence in court. Thus, physical abuse is the only type of abuse that is reported. The court only recognizes tangible legal evidence.
