Softening-up Stage

Accepting what has been told to you, and repeating them out-loud to
others (not necessarily believing it)

Internalization stage
Take your outwardly statements and believe them

Consolidation stage
Make the person do things that will make it hard for them to go back to
their old life

Rob a bank, take away any connections you had with people outside of
the group
○

Doesn’t happen by some form of miracle, there are actual steps (4 stages)

Often suggests one easy solution to all of your problems
•
Offer what appears to be unconditional love, connections, and attention, which
makes it very appealing for you to follow these leaders

They control the information that you receive as a group member

The Situation
Forewarning
Knowing ahead of time that someone is going to try and change your
attitude about something, you are less likely to fall prey to that persuasive
message.

3 groups of high school, 2 groups knew why, 1 did not. 1st knew 10
minutes before, 2nd knew 5 minutes before, 3rd had no forewarning.
Those who had more time to prepare themselves were less likely to be
persuaded.

Inoculation
Medically- getting a shot with a small dose of a virus so that your body
can build up a resistance against it
○
Psychologically- when a person gives you a small amount of information
before presenting the entire message, you are less likely to be persuaded
○
