Hominins (ome form of h. erectus) arrive by 1. 4m bp. H. heidelbergensis arrives 6-500,000 bp from africa (a brand new migration: evolve into neanderthals 250,000 bp. Eventually we modern humans arrive about 40,000 bp. Sites with evidence for the early arrival: orce, spain. Venta micena: cranial fragments that dat to 1. 6 mya, not sure that it is in an arch site; not sure if remains are hominins; no evidence that people were there, no stone tools. Barranco leon: no hominin remains but there are stone tools, 1. 4 mya; oldest evidence in europe, well dated by various methods: Unesco world heritage site; lots of sites. In the 1800s, the spanish cut a rail line right through the hills and bisecting a number of dolinas in the process; you"ll be walking through a cross section of dolinas. The dolinas are part of a bigger and complex cave system: grand dolina.
