There is evidence for three separate migrations of homo erectus in europe. Some form of h erectus arrives by 1. 4 million bp: heidelbergensis arrives 600-500k bp. Sites: atapuerca (north) and orce, spain (sourth) Orce: venta micena 1. 6 mya site, barranco. In venta micena, cranial fragment found that dates back to 1. 6 mya. And no stone tools found from the same layer. But crude stone tools have been found (1. 4 mya) Atapuerca: series of limestone hills, unesco world heritage site. A 19th centry rail line cut through several dolinas (cave systems) and sediments were found. There was a text excavation in gran dolina from 1981 1993. Since late 1990s formal excavations have been going on there. Early hominin remains were found in gran dolina layer 6 (there are 11 layers) Around a 100 bone fragments were found from 6 different individuals. Radiometric (absolute) dating methods and paleomagnetism suggest these remains are 800-875,000 years old.
