BPK 143 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Wrinkle, Botulinum Toxin, Ageism
Document Summary
Language a: language & literature: part of the language and literature course, part two advertising. Ageism is discrimination or stereotyping against a person or a group based on their age. Common ageism is against adolescents, children (ideas not taken seriously) and the elderly (old and weak) in society. However, this essay is based on ageism against the elderly and how the media"s representation of the elderly inadvertently causes discrimination and stereotyping of this particular group. It is a truth that the media"s representation of us affects the way people treat, consider and view us. Likewise media can affect how we see ourselves. Media can successfully affect people"s perception and judgement of any group, like ethnic and religious minorities, women and the elders of our community. For instance, the picture above shows one of the most common stereotypes the older generation faces which is being technologically handicapped/ challenged. The picture is humorous, however, at an equivalent level also offensive.
