Document Summary

Lots of enzymes have metal associated with them (copper, iron etc), without them they don"t function as well. Aerobic means organism uses o2 as a final electron acceptor. Eg of compounds that interfere with oxygen transport and its use. Co, toxic: binds preferentially to hemoglobin (hb, stronger ligand than o2 (200x) At high partial pressures of o2, hb is fully saturated. When co is present, hb cannot be fully saturated. Used in coal mines for presence of co gases: would bring canary into mine shafts. Bird body temperature @ 42c: high respiration rates, high co uptake -> faster effects, except bird hb binds co differently than humans, human co binds 200x better than o2, canary co binds 110x better than o2. Nitrite has ability to oxidize to fe3+, does not bind o2: called methemoglobin. Hemolytic compound, causes disruption of rbc membrane, hb leaks out, broken down to bilirubin, excreted in bile. If you cant excrete bilirubin you get jaundice.
