Academic evidence typically appears in essays as expert testimony. Can make credible and useful evaluations even though you are not yet an expert in the field yourself: persuasiveness of expert testimony comes from the respect we gibe to disciplined analysis & empirical research. Results = based on scientific/logically-based modes of analysis and observation. Some essayists" arguments rely on a style much influenced by scientific techniques/reporting. Analysis = important means of formal development in the essay on social/technological/etc. other scientific means marks the difference between formal/familiar approaches: analysis requires impersonal stance, can be used in many ways. There are a # of different types of analysis but 2 are often used: casual analysis. Gives evidence for why something is the way it is. Concentrates on finding/proving causes or reasons for a social practice or on showing that it has a certain predictable effect. Often lead to surprises or the uncovering of hidden relations & influences: structural or process analysis.
