First half of the fith century in athens. In 477 the representaives from athens and 150 other polis met at delos: formed the delian league, designed to ight the persians at sea. Sparta was at the head of the hellenic league: some members of this joined the delian league. Mainly costal ciies: spartans did not join. Members of the league could contribute ships or money to the league yearly: most chose money. Athens lead the league with the understanding that it would use the league"s ships to protect its members, and stay out of the poliics. League policy was to be decided by an assembly made up as representaives from the polis: athens would ensure the policies were enacted, and control the inances. Athenian named arisides assessed what each league member should pay based on populaion and wealth of the polis. Cimon, the son of miliades: named irst commander of the league navy.
