The perils of politics in the new republic. After creating the constitution, america"s elites now had to govern with it. Moving from government in theory to government in practice brought many of the conflicts that had been smoothed over at the constitution convention back a vengeance. America"s first two political parties battled viciously for power and for the future of america, for which they had two very different visions. But social and economic forces, not political ideas, what have a major say as to what path the nation took in the early 1800s. America"s first parties: the federalist vs. the republicans. The group that pushed for ratifying constitution. Supported a strong central government, a mixed economy featuring trading and industry, and america to be a player on the global stage. Key figures include alexander hamilton, john adams. Had a vision of america as a rural, agrarian nation of small farmers withdrawn from europe"s struggles.
