Document Summary

Biol 107 - lecture #13 eukaryotic cell structure pt. iii: organelles in the endomembrane system, the golgi apparatus, fedex of the cell. Sorts cargo, the different destination within endomembrane system: er, plasma membrane. Lysosome: structure: series of flattened membrane bound compartments called cisternae, two models of golgi trafficking. How does cargo travel between cisternae within the golgi body: vesicle trafficking, cisternal maturation. Evidence: vesicles are observed associated with medial golgi, there are cisternal specific enzymes, molecules too large to fit into vesicles can move through golgi, cell stomach. Allows recycling of old or damaged organelles: lysosomal storage disorders. Tay-sachs: patients carry a mutation where they fail to produce a lysosomal enzyme or a specific lipid accumulate in lysosomal, vacuoles, causes cell death. Variable function depending on cell type: food vacuoles, contractile vacuoles, pump excess water out of the cell, central vacuole, specific organelle of plants, functions in storage and part of plant endomembrane system.
